What Is Hojicha?

Hojicha is a type of Japanese green tea, made by roasting green tea leaves, stems, stalks, and twigs. It can be finely ground into a powder, just how regular green tea is ground into matcha powder.

Since hojicha is roasted, it is smoky, earthy, and nutty in flavor. It’s brown in color, and is sometimes even called “brown matcha”!

Ingredients

To make creamy hojicha cold foam from scratch, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Hojicha cold foam labeled ingredients laid out on a wooden table.
  • The heavy cream and milk give the cold foam its unique fluffy, creamy texture.
  • I purchased my hojicha powder from Amazon, but specialty tea shops may carry it.
  • I used vanilla paste, but you can also use vanilla extract or even vanilla syrup.
  • You can use any sweetener you prefer, such as granulated sugar, brown sugar, or alternative sugar. If using a liquid sweetener like honey or maple syrup, you will need to mix the ingredients a little bit longer.
