Ingredients

To make an einspanner from scratch, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • The base is a simple shot of espresso. You can always use espresso powder and water if you don’t have an espresso machine, like me!
  • The topping is a simple whipped cream, made of heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla (optional).
  • Not pictured, but you can dust the top of your einspanner with some cocoa powder!

How to Make Homemade Einspanner

Step 1: In a small bowl, whisk together heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla (optional) until soft peaks. You can also use a frother.

Step 2: In your serving cup, add 1-2 shots of espresso and top with whipped cream. Optionally dust with cocoa powder and enjoy!

Equipment

Ingredients 

  • ¼ cup (59.5 g) heavy cream chilled
  • ½-2 tablespoons (8 g) powdered sugar adjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon (4 g) vanilla paste or extract; optional
  • 1-2 shots (30 g) espresso no espresso machine? use water and espresso powder!
  • cocoa powder for dusting (optional)

Instructions 

Make the whipped cream:

  • In a small mixing bowl, add ¼ cup heavy cream, ½-2 tablespoons powdered sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla (optional). Use whisk to whip until soft peaks. You can also use a frother.
    Taste and add more powdered sugar to your liking. If it's too thick, stir in a splash of heavy cream.

Assemble einspanner:

  • In your serving cup, add 1-2 shots espresso. Generously dollop on whipped cream. Dust with cocoa powder (optional), and enjoy!

Notes

Traditional einspanners feature hot espresso and cold whipped cream, but many cafes sell them hot or cold!
