What Is Hojicha?

Hojicha is a type of Japanese green tea, made by roasting green tea leaves, stems, stalks, and twigs. It can be finely ground into a powder, just how regular green tea is ground into matcha powder.

Since hojicha is roasted, it is smoky, earthy, and nutty in flavor, with hints of cocoa and caramel. It’s brown in color, and is sometimes even called “brown matcha”!

❤️ Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • It only takes a few minutes! Simply add everything to your mason jar, then mix until light, thick, and fluffy. Or, use a frother if you have one on hand.
  • It’s super versatile. You can switch up the sweetener or add different toppings, like whipped cream instead of cold foam.

Ingredients

For the hojicha latte:

Hojicha latte labeled ingredients laid out on a wooden table.
  • I purchased my hojicha powder from Amazon, but specialty tea shops may carry it.
  • Similar to a matcha latte, the hojicha powder will be mixed with hot water until lump-free, then combined with your milk and sweetener of choice.
  • Hojicha and matcha are best enjoyed with plant-based milk. This is because dairy milk has proteins that interfere with absorbing the antioxidants of the matcha! Oat milk is my favorite because of how light and creamy it is.

For the hojicha cold foam:

Hojicha cold foam labeled ingredients laid out on a wooden table.
  • The heavy cream and milk give the cold foam its unique fluffy, creamy texture.
  • I used vanilla paste, but you can also use vanilla extract or even vanilla syrup.
  • You can use any sweetener you prefer, such as granulated sugar, brown sugar, or alternative sugar. If using a liquid sweetener like honey or maple syrup, you will need to mix the ingredients a little bit longer.
