How to Make A Dog-Friendly Cake

Whipped egg whites in a stainless steel bowl.

Step 1: In a bowl, whip egg whites until you reach stiff peaks, about 5-10 minutes.

Egg white cake layers on lined baking sheet.

Step 2: Transfer stiff egg whites to baking sheet lined with parchment paper. You can either do circles, or even shape them into a single-layer sheet cake. Bake at 450°F/233°C until golden. Depending on the shape/size of your cake, the time will differ. Check around the 3 minutes mark and keep an eye on them! Let fully cool.

Step 3: Prepare your toppings. I made whipped cream and used mini cookie cutters on watermelon and cantaloupe!

Step 4: Assemble your cake! I ended up cutting my cake layers in half to have 4 pieces. I spread Greek yogurt in between each layer, and topped with whipped cream and fruit. Enjoy!

Storage

The dog birthday cake is best enjoyed the day you make it. However, you can store the undecorated cake layers in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 2 days. They will just get a little soggy.

Ingredients

  • 3 (90 g) egg whites* see notes
  • toppings fruit, whipped cream, Greek yogurt, vegetables, dog treats, etc.

Instructions

Preparation:

  • Tip: Make sure your whisk and bowl are completely cleaned, dried, and do not have any traces of grease or fat. If they do, then the egg whites will not whip correctly. For extra precaution, wipe them down with white vinegar to remove any oils, and fully dry.
  • Preheat oven to 450°F/233°C. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.

Make cake layers:

  • In your mixing bowl, add 3 egg whites*. Whip on medium-high speed until you get stiff peaks, about 5-10 minutes.
The mixture should be white, cloud-like, thick, and no longer liquidy.
  • Transfer mixture to lined baking sheet. I made two circles, but feel free to shape yours into a sheet cake, square, heart, etc.!
  • Depending on the size/shape of your cake layers, the bake time will differ.
I recommend checking at the 3-minute mark, then keeping a close eye on the cake if it's not done. Bake until golden, then remove from oven and let fully cool on the pan.
  • Assemble and decorate, adding your dog's favorite treats, fruits, or vegetables as toppings!
I cut my two cake layers in half to have a total of four layers. I spread Greek yogurt in between each layer, then topped with watermelon and cantaloupe.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

*Depending on the size of your dog, use more or less egg whites! I chose to give my 65-pound dog 3 egg whites, which is approximately 50 calories.
