To make this whipped maple butter recipe, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • The softened unsalted butter and brown sugar are the base of this recipe and will be whipped until light and creamy. Then, it will be mixed with the maple syrup, vanilla, salt, and ground cinnamon (optional).
  • You can use either vanilla extract or vanilla paste (1:1).
  • The fine sea salt can be swapped out with regular table salt.

How to Make Brown sugar Maple Butter

Step 1: Using an electric mixer or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat softened butter and brown sugar until light and creamy, about 3-4 minutes. Scrape down sides of bowl as needed.

Step 2: Mix in maple syrup, vanilla, salt, and cinnamon (optional) until fully combined. Enjoy it on warm rolls, pancakes, and more!

What is maple butter made of?

My homemade maple butter is made with maple syrup, brown sugar, butter, vanilla, and salt! If you’d like some spice to it, I recommend adding some cinnamon.

How long does homemade maple syrup butter last?

In an airtight container at room temperature, it can last up to 3 days. I recommend storing it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 months. See storage instructions for more information.

Can I use salted butter to make maple butter?

Yes, absolutely! If you’re using salted butter, I recommend tasting the whipped butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, and vanilla mixture before adding any salt. Then, add salt to taste.

Storage

  • Room temperature: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • Refrigeration instructions: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 months. If you’d like the butter to be fluffy again, let it come to room temperature and re-whip it for 2-3 minutes.
  • Freezing instructions: Store in a freezer-safe container for up to 1 year.

Ingredients 

  • 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter softened
  • 2 tablespoons (24 g) brown sugar light or dark (1:1)
  • ¼-½ cup (80.5 g) maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon (13 g) vanilla paste or extract (1:1)
  • ½ teaspoon (3 g) fine sea salt or table salt (1:1)
  • 1 tsp (2 g) ground cinnamon optional

Instructions 

  • In a large mixing bowl, whip 1 cup unsalted butter and 2 tablespoons brown sugar with electric whisk until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Scrape down sides of bowl as needed.
  • Add in ¼-½ cup maple syrup, 1 tablespoon vanilla, ½ teaspoon fine sea salt, and 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional). Whip until combined. Scrape down sides of bowl.
  • Taste butter and adjust to your liking—add more cinnamon, maple syrup, or salt as necessary. Transfer to butter keeper or other storage container, and enjoy!

Notes

Variations:
  • For a pumpkin spice maple version, replace the cinnamon with 1:1 pumpkin spice mix.
